‘As Avalokiteshvara, the great compassionate one, looked upon the sorrows of the world, his tears formed a lake in which a lotus sprung up. When the lotus opened, the goddess Tara was revealed’

I painted this bell with an OM symbol and Tara's seed Syllable 'Tam' to donate to the Crafting Resistance sale held on Sunday at Greenwich House Pottery in the West Village. All sales benefited the ACLU and they raised over $25,000! Tara is considered to be the goddess of universal compassion who represents virtuous and enlightened activity.

Tara is the female aspect of Avalokiteshvara, who embodies the compassion of all Buddhas. Her mantra is OṀ TĀRE TUTTĀRE TURE SVAHĀ. Tara has many different aspects, each denoted by a color and strength. I'm particularly drawn to Green Tara. I imagine her a deep luminous emerald green.

Above is a beautiful cloth print I have hanging at my studio from prayerflags.com and the Tara Chain links, inspired by Tara's earrings.
